The hardware I recommend
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Buying through these links supports the site at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure
This is a short list sorted by job, not a catalog. It's the fast path when you want me to just tell you what to get. If you want the why, every pick links to its full guide.
Words you'll see on this page
- Idle power: how much electricity a computer uses when it's on but not busy. For an always-on server, this number drives your power bill.
- Quick Sync: a video engine built into many Intel chips that converts video fast and with little power.
- NAS: network-attached storage. A box of drives on your home network that every device can save to.
- VRAM: the memory on your graphics card. AI models load into it, so more VRAM means you can run bigger models.
- 1GbE / 2.5GbE: network speeds. Most home networking is 1GbE; 2.5GbE is about 2.5 times faster, and 10GbE about 10 times.
- UPS: a battery backup that keeps your server running through short power cuts and lets it shut down safely.
Mini PC: Intel N100 or N150
The default first server. A box like the Beelink Mini S12 Pro is quiet, idles around 10 W, and handles media, ad blocking, home automation, and a set of Docker apps. Get 16 GB of RAM if you can. Full reasoning in the under-$300 mini PC guide.

Used business tiny PC (ThinkCentre, OptiPlex, EliteDesk)
More cores and RAM room for the money than anything new, with Quick Sync for media. A used Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny is the best value in the hobby if you don't mind buying used. See the used tiny PC guide.

NAS: a finished box from Synology or UGREEN
A box full of drives every device can reach, with protection against a dead drive. A Synology DS225+ is the easy path, or you can build your own. A NAS is still one copy, not a backup. See the best NAS for beginners.

Turnkey server (Umbrel Home or a CasaOS box)
Prefer to buy it built? These come with an app store and one-click installs for Jellyfin, Immich, Vaultwarden, and more, with no Linux or Docker needed. A ZimaBoard 2 running CasaOS is a popular pick. A finished NAS or a Home Assistant Green fills the same just-works role. You trade some flexibility and value for convenience.

SSD: SATA or NVMe
If a machine still starts from a spinning hard drive, an SSD like the Crucial P3 is the biggest speedup for the money. A small SSD for the system plus a big hard drive for storage is the classic setup.

RAM: DDR4 or DDR5 kit
Memory lets you run a dozen apps and a virtual machine or two. Going to 16 or 32 GB transforms a busy box. RAM prices are high in 2026, so buy only what you'll use, and check your exact type and maximum first.

Graphics card: VRAM matters most
For running AI models at home, VRAM decides what you can run. The RTX 3060 12GB is the budget sweet spot, and it's the card I picked for my own AI rig. 24 GB fits 32B-size models. See best GPU for local AI under $500 and what each VRAM size runs.

Intel Arc A310 or A380
An Intel Arc A380 drops into an older tower and adds Quick Sync plus AV1, turning it into a proper Jellyfin server. Skip it unless media is your goal.

2.5GbE adapter
Older machines top out at 1GbE. A 2.5GbE adapter like the UGREEN USB adapter (or a PCIe card for desktops) speeds up file transfers a lot. It only helps if your router or switch is also 2.5GbE.

UPS (battery backup)
A server runs all day, so a power cut in the middle of saving a file can corrupt data. A small UPS like the APC Back-UPS gives it time to shut down cleanly. Desktops need one; laptops already have a battery. Size one with the UPS runtime calculator.
