A used RTX 3090 is still worth it for local AI in 2026 only if you specifically need 24 GB of VRAM, for 27B to 32B models or image generation without squeezing. At the roughly $1,200 to $1,800 that used cards cost on eBay in early November 2026, everyone else gets more for their money from a used RTX 3060 12GB or two of them.
The frustrating part is the price. A used 3090 cost about $800 in January 2026 and has climbed almost every month since, because the same memory shortage that pushed up RAM prices also pushed up graphics cards with lots of VRAM. The card didn't get better. It just got rarer. So the real question is whether 24 GB on one card is worth paying four or five times what a 12 GB card costs.
Words you'll see in this guide
- VRAM: the memory on your graphics card. AI models load into it, so more VRAM means you can run bigger models.
- Parameters (7B, 14B, 70B): a rough measure of a model's size. "8B" means 8 billion. Bigger models are usually smarter and need more memory.
- Quantization: shrinking a model by storing its numbers less precisely, so it fits in less memory with a small drop in quality. Think of saving a photo as a smaller JPEG. "4-bit" (Q4) is the common setting.
- Memory bandwidth: how fast a graphics card can read its own memory, in GB per second. For local AI it mostly decides how fast a model writes, because the card reads through the whole model for every word.
- Tokens per second: how fast a model writes. A token is roughly three-quarters of a word.
- CUDA: Nvidia's software for running AI on its graphics cards. Most local AI tools support it first and best.
- PSU: the power supply, the box inside the case that turns wall power into power every part can use.
- Idle power: how much electricity a computer uses when it's on but not busy. For an always-on server, this number drives your power bill.
What does a used RTX 3090 cost in November 2026?
Working used RTX 3090 cards were listed on eBay for roughly $1,550 to $1,800 in early November 2026, with the cheapest working cards and early auction bids around $1,200. Refurbished cards from resellers sat at the top of that range or above it.
- January 2026: about $800 for the cheapest working used cards.
- May to July 2026: about $1,050.
- September 2026: peaked around $1,350.
- October to early November 2026: about $1,200 for the cheapest cards, with most Buy It Now listings well above that.
For comparison, used RTX 3060 12GB cards were around $300 to $320 and used RTX 4090s around $3,000 on eBay over the same weeks.
Don't wait for Black Friday on this one. Black Friday sales are for new hardware. Used card prices follow supply, and nothing about late November adds 3090s to the market. If a renewed card shows up in a sale, judge it against the eBay range above, not against its own "was" price. The Black Friday deal checklist shows how.
What can 24 GB of VRAM run that 12 or 16 GB can't?
24 GB of VRAM runs the 27B to 32B class of models fully on the card at 4-bit, which 12 and 16 GB cards can't do without spilling into system RAM. That class is where local models start to feel noticeably smarter for coding, long documents and reasoning.
| Model (4-bit) | Download | 12 GB card | 24 GB card |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8B to 14B models | 5 to 9 GB | Yes | Yes, with long chats |
| Gemma 4 26B A4B (MoE) | 18 GB | Partly, rest in system RAM | Yes |
| Qwen 3.6 27B | About 17 GB | Mostly in system RAM, slow | Yes |
| Gemma 4 31B | 20 GB | Mostly in system RAM, slow | Yes, short to medium chats |
| Qwen 3 32B | About 20 GB | Mostly in system RAM, slow | Yes |
| 70B models | About 40 GB | No | No, needs two 24 GB cards |
For the model-by-model details, see what a 16 GB vs 24 GB card runs and VRAM for Gemma 4. If your list of models stops at 14B, you don't need 24 GB, and the rest of this page is mostly about saving you money.
How fast is an RTX 3090 for local LLMs?
For writing speed, the RTX 3090 is close to an RTX 4090 and much faster than a 3060. Text generation is limited mostly by memory bandwidth, and the 3090's 936 GB/s is about 2.6 times the RTX 3060 12GB's 360 GB/s and only about 7% less than the RTX 4090's 1,008 GB/s.
| Card | VRAM | Memory bandwidth | Board power | Software |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 3060 12GB | 12 GB | 360 GB/s | 170 W | CUDA, works everywhere |
| RTX 3090 | 24 GB | 936 GB/s | 350 W | CUDA, works everywhere |
| RTX 4090 | 24 GB | 1,008 GB/s | 450 W | CUDA, works everywhere |
| Intel Arc Pro B60 | 24 GB | 456 GB/s | Up to 200 W | Vulkan or Intel's tools, more setup |
| AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 | 32 GB | 640 GB/s | 300 W | ROCm on Linux, or Vulkan |
On paper, that means a model that fits on both cards writes roughly twice as fast or more on a 3090 than on a 3060. A 4090 pulls ahead when it reads in long prompts and documents and in image generation, where its newer chip matters more. For chatting with a 27B or 32B model, the gap is small.
Who a used RTX 3090 is NOT for
- You run 8B to 14B models. A used RTX 3060 12GB runs them fully on the card for a fraction of the money. See the best GPU for local AI under $500.
- Your PC is a small prebuilt or a mini PC. Many 3090s take three slots, run over 300 mm long, and need two or three 8-pin power cables. Check your case and power supply before you even look at listings.
- You want a quiet, low-power box that's on all day. A 3090 pulls up to 350 W while it works and, by owner reports, idles anywhere from about 20 W to over 40 W depending on drivers and displays. A mini PC idles far lower.
- You want 70B models on one card. One 24 GB card can't hold a 70B model. That takes two 3090s, a 128 GB unified-memory box, or a Mac with lots of memory. Details in VRAM for Llama 3 70B.
- You'd only use it a few hours a month. Renting a GPU by the hour can cost less. See rent a GPU vs. build your own.
What are the alternatives to a used RTX 3090?
-
RTX 3060 12 GB (used), one or twoThe budget pick for 8B to 14B models, and used ones cost a fraction of a 3090. Two of them give you 24 GB in total, and Ollama splits a model across both cards on its own. It's slower than one 3090 and needs a board with two full-size slots, but it gets 27B and 32B models off system RAM for much less money.Check price on Amazon
-
RTX 4090 24 GBSame 24 GB, newer chip, much faster at image generation and reading long prompts. For chatting with LLMs it's only a little faster than a 3090, while used ones cost roughly twice as much (see prices above). Hard to justify for local LLMs alone.Check price on Amazon
-
AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 32 GBNew, with a warranty and 8 GB more than a 3090. Ollama supports it on Linux with AMD's ROCm v7 driver, per the Ollama GPU docs. It has sold well above its launch list price through 2026, so compare it with a used 3090 before you buy. Owners say its blower fan is loud. A good pick if you run Linux and want 32 GB new.Check price on Amazon
-
Intel Arc Pro B60 24 GBNew, 24 GB, and lower power than a 3090. The catch is software: no CUDA, about half the 3090's memory bandwidth, and more setup through Vulkan or Intel's own tools. Only for people who like tinkering.Check price on Amazon
How to check a used RTX 3090 before you buy
Used 3090s are four to six years old by now, and many spent years in gaming rigs or mining farms. None of that rules a card out, but buy where you can return it.
- Buy from a seller with returns, or from a renewed RTX 3090 listing with a warranty.
- Ask the seller for a photo of the card running, with the model number visible.
- Check that your power supply can feed it. Nvidia suggests a 750 W PSU for a 3090, and many builders go to 850 W because the card can spike above its rating for a split second.
- Install the card and the Nvidia driver, then open a terminal and run:
nvidia-smiYou should see:
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090with24576MiBof memory. - Load a model that fills most of the card and leave it writing for a few minutes:
ollama run gemma4:31bYou should see: a
>>>prompt once the 20 GB download finishes. Ask for a long answer. - In a second terminal, watch power and temperature while it writes:
nvidia-smi --query-gpu=power.draw,temperature.gpu --format=csv -l 2You should see: steady readings with no crash or freeze. A card that shuts down or throws errors under load goes back.
The 3090 also has memory chips on the back of the board, and they run hot. If temperatures climb and the fans scream, new thermal pads are a common fix, but that's a job for a card you've already decided to keep.
Can you cut a 3090's power draw for local AI?
Yes. Owners commonly cap the RTX 3090 at around 280 W instead of its stock 350 W, and report that LLM writing speed barely changes, because text generation waits on memory more than on the chip. Below about 200 W, speed drops off sharply.
- Set the limit (it resets when you reboot):
sudo nvidia-smi -pl 280You should see: a line saying the power limit was set to 280.00 W.
- Run a model and compare its speed with and without the cap:
ollama run gemma4:31b --verboseYou should see: an "eval rate" in tokens per second after each answer.
