What is Claude AI? A beginner's guide
Claude is an AI assistant made by a company called Anthropic. You chat with it in plain language on claude.ai or in its app. It can:
- Answer questions
- Write and edit text
- Summarize long documents
- Read files you upload
- Help with code
It's one of the three leading general-purpose AI assistants, along with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. It's known for careful, detailed answers and a strong focus on safety.
Words you'll see in this guide
- LLM: large language model, the kind of AI behind ChatGPT and Claude. A local LLM runs on your own computer.
- Model: one specific version of an AI. Claude comes in several models of different sizes and speeds.
- Hallucination: when an AI states something false as if it were true.
- Training cutoff: the date a model's built-in knowledge stops.
- API: a way for one program to send requests to another, often over the internet.
What people use it for
If you've used ChatGPT, Claude will feel familiar: you type, it answers. Past basic chat, here's what it does:
- Writing and editing. Drafting emails, changing tone, brainstorming, summarizing. This is what Claude built its reputation on.
- Reading your files. Upload a PDF, spreadsheet, or image and ask questions about it. Useful for long reports and contracts.
- Help with code. Explaining, writing, and fixing code, from a one-line fix to a small app.
- Web search. It can look things up online, so its answers aren't limited to old training data.
- Artifacts. A side panel where Claude builds things you can see and edit: a document, a chart, a working web page, or a small interactive app.
- Projects and connectors. Workspaces that remember your files and instructions. Paid plans can also connect to tools like Google Drive, Gmail, and Slack.
The models
"Claude" is a family of models, and you pick one for the job. As of 2026 the lineup has four names. Cheaper models are faster; pricier ones are smarter.
| Model | Think of it as | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Haiku | Fast and cheap | Quick, simple tasks in large numbers |
| Sonnet | The everyday workhorse | Most day-to-day work |
| Opus | The deep thinker | The hardest reasoning and analysis |
| Fable | The flagship | Huge documents and long, multi-step tasks |
What it costs
The free plan is useful on its own: a limited number of messages a day on the faster models, enough to try it out. The paid plans, roughly:
- Free: $0, with a daily cap on the faster models.
- Pro: about $20 a month, with much higher limits and the most capable models.
- Max: about $100 to $200 a month for heavy users who want the highest limits.
- Team and Enterprise: priced per person, or custom, for businesses.
What it's good at
Claude is strongest at writing, following detailed instructions, working through long documents, and code. Many people find its tone more natural and its long answers more careful than the alternatives. Most beginners get useful work out of it within minutes.
Where it falls short
- It can be confidently wrong. Like every chatbot, Claude sometimes states false things as fact. Double-check anything important.
- Its knowledge has a cutoff date. Web search helps with current events, but it isn't a live search engine by default.
- Usage limits. Even paid plans cap how much you can use in a given window, and heavy users hit them.
- It runs in the cloud. Your prompts are processed on Anthropic's servers, not your device. That matters for privacy, as covered below.
Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini
None of them is the best at everything, and the lead changes every few months as new models come out. Claude is known for writing, reasoning, and long documents. ChatGPT has the widest range of features. Gemini ties in closely with Google's apps. All three have a free plan, so try each one on your own tasks and keep the one that fits how you work.
How to try Claude
- Go to claude.ai.
- Make a free account.
- Start typing. There's nothing to install.
If you end up using it constantly, or the daily limits or privacy start to bother you, that's the time to look at running your own local AI. Curious whether your computer could already do it? Put your specs into the Server Calculator.
Quick answers
What is Claude AI?
Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. You chat with it in plain language on a website or app, and it can answer questions, write and edit, summarize documents, analyze files, and help with code. It's one of the leading assistants, alongside ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

There's a free plan with a daily message limit. Paid plans raise the limits and unlock the most capable models. Prices change, so check Anthropic's site for current details.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
Neither is better at everything, and the lead changes as new models come out. Claude is known for writing, reasoning, coding, and long documents. ChatGPT has a very broad set of features. The best way to choose is to try the free plan of each on your own tasks.
Does Claude keep my data private?
Claude is a cloud service, so your prompts are processed on Anthropic's servers. Anthropic offers privacy settings for how chats are used, and business plans have stronger controls. If your prompts must never leave your machine, a local AI model on your own hardware is the fully private option.
